A friend of mine wanted to know the answer to this general question ;
For what different reasons would Window 98 always start in SAFE MODE ?
I thought that it could be "BootSafe=1" in the Msdos.sys file, but is there any other reasons ?
This is just a general question, does anyone else have any other suggestions ? Thanks

It will boot to safe mode if the previous boot failed.
Make sure that MSCONFIG is set to Normal startup ...

Thanks Carl, If the previous boot failed, what would force the computer to load in safe mode ? And would this correct itself ?

Sorry, for interjecting a question from Kierkegaard's post, but with your indulgence....HPRO, is there any reason to not run "Selective Startup" and minimize all the resource hogging proggies that load during a normal startup? I have been running this way for years and have had no problems that I can associate with a Selective Startup.
Selective startup is fine as long as you only modify the config.sys, autoexec.bat, win.ini, system.ini, or startup stuff.
After a failed boot, it SHOULD give you the menu suggesting safe mode - you can arrow up to Normal and hit Enter. If it shows the menu again, just repeat. If this is a name brand computer, often the splash screen won't drop to show you the menu and it waits 30 seconds and goes to safe mode. Most splash screens can be dropped by hitting Escape.
I some cases where I wasn't able to use some applications running in Selective startup - then also it does delay you boot process - remove those things right in the registry and you will see a speed increase in starting the computer ....
But this is again individual... everyone does it as he likes it and as it fit's his own needs..

I only disable or decheck in the system.ini tab and I do not notice any lag time in boot up or loading the OS. I am leary of my knowledge of editing the registry so ....what I don't KNOW about I seldom wing it.
then take a look at the startup tab in MSCONFIG - how may apps are loading which aren't original Windows Apps ? most of them will display in the System Tray ... Those ones I'm talking about...

HPRO, ALL of the applications I disable have nothing to do with the OS, with the possible exception of Microsoft Findfast. Findfast is a horrible waste of resources IMHO. My Creative SoundBlaster Live Platinum is the absolute WORST! I should have done a selective install when I put the software CD in, but, as it was immediately after install, the System Tray took up about half my START bar with unnecessary TSR's. By doing a selective startup and dechecking these apps in the system.ini tab within msconfig, I avoid loading these apps and they are still available to me from the Program menu.
Yes you might are right in few of them - the ones you see here just a few will not load in system.ini but in the startup tab instead Start with either McAfee or Norton AV scanner - Startup only
Followed up with ICQ ..then also if you use BlackIce Firewall it's loaded from startup as well as from the START> Programs >Start Menu
There are more like there more like Easy Cd Creator - isn't loaded from System.ini - but from the starup Tab instead - all of them can be directly be deleted from the registryh in those two Key stings I place below - and nothing is to worry there since there is always scanreg /restore which can bring them back on the fly or if something has had been edited wrongly..
ICQ will be called from:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\run
then look at the right side for mirabilis ...
most others I mentioned will be called from
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
and also from the following keys like Runonce ,RunOnceEX and alike ...
Note AV - scanning programs will load from at least 3 differend keys...in the registry..
On my computer heree ther are only two Icons in the startup which are loading auto
Volume and Internat - Language switcher...
Nothing else ..
BTW the Program Menu doesn't load something unless you click on it as those are only shortcuts...
