I have run upon several free utilities to clean up Registry entries. Is there a "Head and Shoulders" utility out there that is VERY clear about options given to clean registry entries? My problem is that I am unsure of how editing or removing entries will affect operation. I would like a utility that gives the option to restore with ease in case of problems.

What do you think of this utility? http://tucows.texoma.net/system/preview/213411.html
The *safest* but not necessarily the most thorough is M$'s RegClean, then run scanreg/fix.

I hope *safest*, meant relatively safe.

It has also been known to rip some directx entries out that result in problems.
I agree with Both - DRzaius and GLC - mostly I use Regclean - but if I really like to get it CLEAN then I use Regcleaner - the one big advantage of RegCleaner you have against REGCLEAN is that you can select entries to be restored each one by one which in reglcean is only possible if you know how to edit the Backup file - haven't had any problems with both - then I must say that Norton WinDoc version 4 Does a good job when used and the manual repair is selected..

I used to use Regclean until I read in several sources that it only cleans registry entries made by Windows and Office - not any other program. That surely must make it's effectiveness rather limited in comparison to broader programs.
Was I misinformed?

Regclean only analyzes one key.
Following is from the program description.
"RegClean analyzes Windows registry keys that are stored in the HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT key in the registry and finds keys that contain erroneous values."
Mike - Yes and also no - Regclean willl not touch strings it doesn't know the existence of - but it will remove strings which are hazarederous or tested as 'empty'value = Death strings..
Galaxien you must be informed wrongly or you are using a very old version of regclean - just did Regclean here - it didn't found much but this what it found is in another key - one you wrote wouldn't be affected by regclean..
