View Full Version : problem using OEM Win98 to reinstall
Hi
I've just installed a new HD after a failure. My copy of Win98 is OEM. I have formatted the drive, copied the cabs to windows/options/cabs and am stuck. How do I get this to install? The only setup program requires windows to run.
I must be doing something wrong.

If you copy the entire windows CD to the HDD then the install will be quicker than if you run it off the CD.
It should simply be a case of running setup.exe and you are away.
The CD I have is the manufacturer's version, and I can't find the relevant setup command.
In the root directory, the install puts up a driver test/installer.
There are two directories:
/preload
/win9x
There is no install/setup in Win9x.
I'm puzzled by this.
The CD comes with dire warnings about not using without a MESH tech to help, but I can't see why. However I can't get it to run as yet.
You do not have a true OEM Windows CD - you have a restore disk. You must boot with it to reinstall Windows.

You may still have problems installing from a restore disk if the restore disk is set up to check for a volume label on the hard drive (such as the HP restore disk does). In this case, if you know the volume label of the old hard disk, then you can name the new hard disk exactly the same and solve the problem. The best way to do an install is to get your hands on an original O/S disk and do a clean install.
