Hi Gang
This may sound like a stupid question, but how can you tell if your sound card has gone dead, short of putting in another one that you know is good. I keep getting conflicts, and I have tried all kinds of drivers. I have installed Windows several times. I have put in drivers and let Windows install some but still no sound. I have the Creative Sound Blaster 16. I had to install Windows 98 several times a while back to get my sounds back, but this time it makes me think it is not Windows but my sound card.
Take care.......Dick
Turn plug and play OS off in the bios and reserve IRQ 5 for Legacy ISA. This is an ISA soundbaster, right?

Hi GLC
Maybe I should add some history to the problem I am having, maybe make a little more sense. It started out not being able to shut the computer down it would just go to a black screen and do nothing else. I tried several different things through Windows fixes, and nothing seemed to help. So I was just sitting there one day and the computer just did not sound right, so I took the case off and sure enough the case fan and the CPU fan was not running. So I found the problem and fixed it and the fans took off running. I started it up and every thing seemed to be working, even the shutting down. But then I noticed the sounds were not working, so I thought every thing got hot and some thing goofed up the sounds, I tried a few things and it seemed to point to a windows problem, so I tried reinstalling 98/SE a couple of times and nothing seemed to bring back the sounds. So that is where I am now, no sound icon in the toolbar, and it keeps saying there is a conflict with some thing. I have tried every driver there is, and even went to Soundblaster for some new ones, that did not work either. I tried what you said, still have the problem. I went thorugh the Bios and set every thing the way it is supposed to be set, according to the book. I have the Sound Blaster 16 by Creative. It was working up until I had the fan problem, that is what made me think the sound board went bad. Sorry about the long explanation, but somethings just cant be explained in a few words.
Take care........Dick: confused:
Yes, you may have fried the card or even the slot - try reseating the card or moving it to another slot, if available.
