Burn music to a CD

Should I burn ITunes music to a cd-r or DVD-r? When I play an older cd-r with music I made years ago in my truck it plays. When I try and play a cd-r with music I put on it today, truck says "bad disc". I've used several with same results.

Got a new batch of cd-r and works great. Did the same process with older ones which were a no-go. I used audio cd on them to.
