Start | Run | type "msconfig" without the quotes and hit enter.
Click the Advanced button and uncheck the box "Disable Scandisk after bad shutdown"

From Explorer, browse to \windows\command
If you find a file called SCANDISK.ALT, rename it.

Where in the process is Scandisk failing? If you need to re-install Scandisk from your Win98, use add/remove programs>Windows setup.

Is there a SCANDISK.exe in \Windows\Command?
If you restart to DOS and enter SCANDISK, does it run?
Try, creating a copy of SCANDISK.exe in the \Windows\Command, except give it the name SCANDISK.alt. (Ensure you are creating a new file, not a new shortcut).

Yes, there is a Scandisk.exe and a Scandisk.alt in that directory and yes, it runs in dos mode...

If there is already a SCANDISK.alt file in that directory, then that is the problem. Rename the file to something like SCANDISKALT.old.
