Okay, today I downloaded Direct X 8.1 on my other computer which is running windows 98. I installed it and I was asked to restart my computer so I restarted. Well, when it was restarting it did everything normal until after I got to the windows 98 loading screen. Once this screen went away my compter shut down completly. It continues to have the same problem each time I try to start it. I've tried to run windows in safe mode but it still shuts down my computer after the windows loading screen. Any ideas on what the problem could be??? Bcause I have no idea what to do. Thanks for the help.

Brandomax,
Hopefully someone else could second what I am about to say. Try to get into a command prompt either by holding CTRL when booting and choosing it or use a 98 boot disk. At the prompt type scanreg/ restore which hopefully will show you 5 backups of your registry when the pc did boot fine. I would choose the date closest to today or the date when you installed direct x8 and then windows should reboot itself and boot up with a good working registry. I would do this if I were in your situation but I do not assure you this will work. HTH

Hitting the F8 key just before the message "Starting Windows 98..." appears presents you with a menu where you can choose the DOS prompt.

When you get a command prompt type in:
Assuming you are at c:
Scanreg /restore and that should prompt you to five of your registry backups. Choose the closest one to the day you installed directx 8.1. Windows will then reboot and hopefully restart ok. I would then either stick with directx8.0 or update your video driver before trying to install directx8.1. I hope that helps.

Hi Brandomax,
We need some more information now.
Give us your complete system specs.
Also did you install any new Hardware or software just prior to installing DX?.
Can you get into Safe Mode by starting the PC cold, holding down the "Ctrl" key and selecting option 3 at the DOS Startup Menu?

I got tired of the problem so I reformatted the computer. It's fine now.

Gee, I intended to give to you that suggestion (reformat the hard drive) but I didn't because I thought you might consider it a very drastic measure.
Glad, to know that your PC is fine by now.
