View Full Version : Constant HDD Activity - Why?

Hello,

Hopefully someone can shed light on this because it's driving me nuts! :)

I've recently put together a new build and everything is fine apart from the fact that the HDD activity LED is flashing every second or so.

At first I assumed it was my spyware/anti-virus program, so I disabled it. Nope, this wasn't causing it.

Then I disabled the indexing service (Oh, I'm using Windows XP BTW). This was not causing the activity.

I've stopped all kinds of processes under task manager to see which one is responsible so far without finding the culprit.

The only thing I can think of is that it's because I've setup my system using RAID 1 on the ICH10R. However, my old system was configured the same except on the older ICH6R and that did not have this HDD activity issue.

Can anyone help me out with this one?

it could be creating a restore point for back-up, also ant virus scan will do that also.

A lot of PC's ive seen do this. The data in the page file (on the hard disk) is constantly being changed, and therefore disk activity in inevitable. Some motherboards/case lights disregard these short pulses and/or it is too quick or faint to see.

I've just checked the access/modification times on my pagefile and they iindicate no access or modification since I started my system, so I don't think this is what's causing the on going access issue.

Also, as referenced by a previous poster to this thrread, I have turned off all monitoring of my drives in XP - so that is not the cause either.
