My 478 motherboard has 2 SATA 1 ports on it but Im currently using IDE for my OS and personal data. I can get SATA hard disks pretty cheap. Is it worth the switch? How much of a gain would I get If I installed XP on two 80gig SATA 1 disks in a RAID 0 setup? I figure thats the best I can do with this machine on 7200rpm drives, correct?

RAID 0 is hazardous to your data. There is very little difference in speed between IDE and SATA 1, but the smaller cables sure make for a lot less clutter.

RAID 0 is hazardous to your data.

How so?

If either one of the drives so much as hiccups, you lose the data on both. The speed gain of RAID 0 is a lot less than people think.
