I have a 640GB external HDD that I want to use to run applications on different computers. I am a college student so I spend a lot of time in the campus computer labs and I want to be able to use the apps I have on my home computer in the campus labs.

I am already aware that using a USB 2.0 drive to run apps is significantly slower (that doesn't matter, it's convenience that I'm concerned with). I'm also aware of the risk of losing data due to the external drive failing, so you can save some of your time by sparing me of all the cautionary details (there is an abundance of these in all of the unhelpful threads I've gone through).

I'm looking for the best way to run apps from an external drive on multiple computers (w/Windows OS's since that's what format my home computer is in). I've already tried MojoPac and Portable Apps. MojoPac is impractical for what I am doing, it requires administrator access on the computer you are connected to. Portable Apps has it's own format (paf.exe or something) so I can't use my apps with it. The apps I plan to use are Finale 2008, FL Studio and Guitar Pro 5.2, all in Windows format.

I appreciate any help you guys can give.

Unfortunately, you need portable apps in order to run just about any Windows software without actually installing them on the computer. Non-portable software is dependent on registry entries on the computer.

Your best bet is get a free logmein.com account and remotely control your home computer.
