Digital tape drive failure

Has anyone here ever had to manually remove a digital backup tape from a tape drive?
We had one of the RAIDed OS drives fail on our server and it looks like it jammed the 35/70GB DLT tape drive at the same time. The tape wouldn't rewind on it's own so I'm removing it by hand. I have the drive out of the tower and have been pulling tape from the drive (the tape is wasted anyway) but I'm unsure about unhooking the tape leader. Any tricks to this? Do I need to start taking covers off the drive to get access?

If possible I would try removing the case, although I've never used a tape drive, yet. However I would want to see if anything internal caused the tape to jam. It's hard to believe that a failed hard drive would cause this.

This can happen if the power to the tape drive is interrupted when it's in motion.
