My PII 233MHZ 64MB system became very slow to load programs. I seem to remember someone saying that disabling Advanced Power Management in BIOS and enabling it in W98SE would help. This I did & the programs do load faster. However I have now lost my Standby option in Shut Down. Thinking that I could install APMS via Windows I selected it in Add New Hardware. The first time I selected this option, the system asked me for the W98 CD & then froze. The second time, it just froze. The ALWAYS ON Power Scheme in Conrol Panel does not appear to work with Hard Disk running even after the time I request a shutdown.

I fail to understand the theory behind enabling and disabling power mangement is going to affect the computer speed. All it does is manage things such as power up/down, suspend modes, etc. It's would be like gaining more horsepower in your 4 banger motor by changing the car battery.

If you are noticing things are running slower, take a look at what processes are running in startup and in the background. Eliminate the ones that don't need to be running constantly. Get some more RAM too, it will help perk things up a bit.

I had already reduced to a minimum all the StartUp programs. The real problem is that my RAM is EDO not SDRAM, so cannot really upgrade any further at a reasonable cost.

So I reenabled APM in BIOS. Rebooted and still no Standby option. Verified that APM was not loaded in System Devices & then went to install it to Windows.
In Add New Hardare/System Devices, I selected Advance Configuration and Power Interface (ACPI), Windows then requests its CD-ROM then freezes up totally when I try to continue with the W98 CD-ROM installed.
