Why does this happen.......

I am trying to help my freind get set up for the internet. He has a p3 450 pc with 64meg ram and a rockwell 56k modem. I have tried removing and reinstalling the modem several times. The pc either doesn't see the modem or if it does and we actually get connected it cuts the connection after about 5 seconds or crashes and restarts or freezes the pc.

Any ideas?

Motherboard? What slot is the modem in?

A lot of Rockwell modems are what is called "virtual" modems. Instead of hardware, the Operating System software performs a lot of the modem functions. Several computer manufacturers have gone to the "virtual" modem because their costs are about $1.00. Unfortuantely, problems occur when the modem is uninstalled. Another drawback to this type of modem is that it uses A LOT OF RESOURCES! If you only have 64MB of ram, that could be why you are experiencing trouble. You might try installing an Intel PCI modem ********AFTER YOU DISABLE NOT UNINSTALL BUT DISABLE THE ROCKWELL************.

I wouldn't put ANY PCI modem into a machine that has an available ISA slot, especially an Intel - that's the old Cirrus Logic chipset and it's miserable.

What is the brand and model of your "Rockwell"?
