Your line may not be 56k compatible, and/or with ISP. There are ways to check to be sure; just mail me if interested. Reboot has tried the USB modem from Diamond and likes it, but adds a word of caution about USB using resources.
Here's a plain old external:

My line is 56K compatible. I know because i was connecting at faster speeds before i changed the modem to this new computer. I dont notice much difference when loading most websites, but sometimes pages like this come up really slowly because of the smileys.:D just figured id ask

nope, cant d/l drivers. it is too old of a modem. got it about 3 or 4 years ago with a Dell XPS D300, so im guessing its proprietary.
The modem that came with that Dell should be a US Robotics model 1749. Verify this by pulling the modem and reading the bar code sticker on it, 1749 should be in there somewhere. US Robotics has a V.90 flash updater and new drivers for it on their website in the OEM modem section. If it's a different model, you should still find what you need in there.
You can also verify the model by running diagnostics and reading through the ATI responses. That's a GOOD modem if it's updated, there really aren't any considerably better modems available.
