I have Windows 98, 133 Mhz, Pentium I. Suddenly this morning my mouse stopped working. I tried 2 other mice and an extra serial adaptor. Still nothing. Message says "computer doesn't recognize mouse. Install Serial mouse now, click OK. Nothing

How do I tell if it's the outlet pins themselves or where the ribbon connects to the motherboard? Is the only way to know is to buy new mouse port? Like I said, I have tried more than 2 mice and more than one serial adaptor. My mouse is serial, obviously!

Thank you much! I know I can count on someone to give answer? :0)
It's actually my boyfriends puter here in the house. That's why I am able to post this question :)

Try a real serial mouse. I have never had good luck with PS/2 to serial adapters for mice. If it still doesnt work, try the other serial port - you should have 2. The second port may or may not be enabled in BIOS - you will have to look. (Integrated Peripherals if it's an Award BIOS).

Hi Glc. I cannot tell you how much i appreciate you taking time to respond. Funny thing is, it started working again later this afternoon. I have no idea why as I had no idea why suddenly it stopped working. BTW we did try the other port and yes it is enabled in BIOS.

Great idea about "real" serial mouse. We get one soon! Thanks again. I will be back when I have more problems...including the mousie :D

Many thanks again.
