speakers near monitor

Hi people,
I know your not supposed to put magnets or anything like that next to your monitor. But i have a cheap pair of speakers ( the new ones I am still waiting on) that i put next to the monitor for like a week already. Will that have any effect on my monitor at all? The new ones I'm getting are the creative lab 5.1, those are ok to keep next to the monitor right ? ( I have a tft lcd ). Thanks before hand for your answers.

Hi kakarott,

Most good speakers that are designed for used with computers are magnetically shielded and you should be able to use them near the monitor. You'll know if they don't have adequate shielding as the monitor image will be affected (warped or vibrating image).

Hey thanks Cricket,
I'm sure the "good" ones will, but what about the cheaper ones? They are computer speakers, but the cheap brands, i dont have the model with me but do you think they are shielded too ?

Also will it immediatly affect the monitor? Or does that happen after time ?

As Cricket stated, the unshielded speakers will warp or distort the monitor image. This will usually happen immediately. So if it hasen't within a week, they are probably ok.

Yup, as justbarron stated, the effect would be immediate. Even if the speakers are cheap, if they're built right by a good manufacturer they should have the correct shielding needed to be able to work next to the monitor. No need to worry.

I don't think you have to worry about it with a TFT monitor. Unshielded speakers distort images because the magnets pull the electron beams the CRT uses to make a picture and the beams don't strike the right dots. I don't think TFT screens use magnetic technology.

No problem, you can put the speakers directly to your monitor. Magnetic fields have absolutely no influence on TFTs since the transistors who control the pixels have fixed locations and the picture is dispalyed digitally.

With CRTs it's a problem because magnetic fields disort the electronic beam and therefore the beam will miss its target and display the pixel somewhere else.

Rule of Thumb: If the downside outwieghs the benefits, don't do it! In an analogy, I was reading in the newspaper an inquiry how one can tell if a can of beans is still good after the can being dented. The reply was something to the effect, a can of beans is fairly cheap. If in doubt, just throw them out. It isn't worth it to save!
