Got a problem with a computer (Compaq DeskPro 6350) which has a Colorado 5 GB tape backup drive. The tape drive has been working perfectly since installation a few years ago, but today generates an error message (when loading the Backup program) stating that 'UISERVE.DLL Not Found'. This message occurs whether using the HP Colorado Backup or the Microsoft backup program.

Nothing else in the system has changed over the past several months. All cables are tight and seem to be OK. We tried uninstalling and reinstalling the software, but the tape drive shows not recognized by the installation program.

The tape is a slave on the second IDE channel, which the CD-ROM drive is Master; the HD is alone as master on the first IDE channel. The CD and HD work perfectly.

Under Device Manager, the tape drive shows as working properly; the parameters that are checked as active are: Enable Hardware Encryption, Disconnect, Synchronize Data Transfer, and Auto-Insert Notification.

Any ideas here? The tape has not been used in about a month or so , so it was a surprise to see today that it is not working.

Many thanks in advance for any assistance on this.

Hi.
Uiserve.dll is a component of the Microsoft backup program, and therefore the system will not run backup till you recover the file, You don't say what Operating system you are running so instuctions for extracting a working copy of the Dll is a little difficult, please repost with details of the system you are running then I can give you more help if you require it.
P.S. Colarado obviously shares the DLL which is why neither Backup program is working

The system is a Compaq DeskPro 6350 and runs Windows 98. The user of the system said that nothing else changed and the he had not deleted any files that he knew of (?). Using the "Find" function, I confirmed that the UISERVE.DLL files are there. Is it possible the file was corrupted?

Thanks again for the assistance.

More than Likely the file has become corrupted, three options available to you.
1. goto sytem file checker Start, Programs, accessories, system Tools,System Information, then click on Tools, System file checker, and choose to scan for altered files, corrupted files. have the windows 98 disc ready in the CDrom, and allow the system to replace the file.
2. same route as above, but choose to extract one file from installation disk, type in the file name that you require, UISERV.DLL in this case. A little more difficult to find the file in the various cab files.
3 remove Microsoft Backup and reinstall (after reboot), it is a long time since I took this option with Backup, but I seem to remember that Backup stores the details of recent backups in a file that is also deleted, so the system will have no record of which backup is on which media.

There is also the final option of reinstalling Colorado backup software, that I am afraid I cannot help with as I have never used that software.

Best of luck

MADMAC,

Thanks for the suggestions; I will try them in the morning to see what is up. I did try the System File Checker and it restored a couple of files from the Win98 CD, but I don't recall which ones were restored; I know the UISERVE file was not one of them.

Error UISERVE.DLL Not Found in Windows 95/98

Go in to Windows Explorer.

Double click on the following folders in turn:-

Program Files - Hewlett-Packard - Colorado Backup - System

Find the file UISERVE.DLL in the right hand window (you may need to change the view to show hidden files), highlight it and copy it in to the Colorado Backup Folder.

If you can't find the file check the view is not set to hide system files.

Close Explorer and go in to the Backup program.

If further errors occur copy all the dll files in the system folder in to the Colorado Backup folder.

Thanks again for the help and suggestions on this problem. I copied all the DLL files a few days ago (haven't had a chance to get back here since then - been too busy working) as previously mentioned and it works OK now (or let's say they haven't had a recurrence of the problem during the past several days).

Now that I have acknowledged the lack of problems since the fix was done, I realize that I am inviting a case of Murphy's Law into this scenario ;).
