Outlook Express

A friend of mine is running Outlook Express 4.72. I know it is old but he likes it. The problem which I can't seem to solve without downloading a newer version. All works fine, but once you open a message and then change boxes... {ex: out box, to deleted items, to send box etc.} The text from messages disappear. It appears to delete itself.
Shows 280+ messages in box but none are visible. Suspect there must be a box someplace that needs to be checked or unchecked.
I am stumped. Can't find disk that came with Gateway and can't find version 4.72 on any web site.
