error diffusion dithering vs ordered dithering ?

Hi ! I finally solved my problem concerning distortions when playing games with my radeon card. The error diffusion dithering was causing it. Now, I set direct 3d at ordered dithering and everything is good. I fo have a question hiwever; what is this dithering ?

Probably the best way to explain is to look inside at a printer control panel, there is sometimes a pic of the different effects it will make.
At least my Cannon 3000 has, error diffusion and dithering etc, I would assume that the video card relates to the same terms in a similar way.
