BURL, I'm not an expert on printers, but we had a problem with my daughter's Z51 that we coulnd't get resolved. I called 1-800-lexmark and a technician there was very helpful. I believe Lexmark's warranty is for one year so your printer may still be in warranty, meaning the tech advice would be free. Is the printhead in the cartridge on the Z42 like the Z51? One problem that I believe she had once was that she used it so seldom, the ink had a tendency to dry up and cause some printing problems. I believe she bought some cleaning solution and qtips and resolved that problem too. Hope this helps.

Okay Burl, this is my take on your cartridge situation: I was talking to my son last night (he's in college also) and rooms with three other guys. They all use his computer and printer, the printer being a Lexmark using the same cartridges as yours. He had a problem in that they all print so many papers he was running out of ink all the time so he bought a refill kit, which consisted of a syringe, ink, and a small drill bit. He said he found out that if he filled the black ink when it was still half full or so, he can reuse the same cartridge four or five times saving him quite a bit of money. The times when he let the cartridge run out and tried to fill them he thinks it burned the printhead up and even though he filled them, they wouldn't print properly. Which now brings us to your problem. According to him there's a sponge in the cartridge and if you're not using your printer very often he thinks your print head possibly becomes dry, they you try to print something and it burns the head up. He suggested going to your Lexmark control program, then into cartridges, then do a "clean print nozzles" and see if that helps you. He also said that when he refills those cartridges (just in case you want to try it) he fills them and lets them sit overnight, if he tries to print with them right away, they don't seem to work very well. I said mayble it takes some time for the ink to permeate down through the sponge. Let me know if you try any of this and how it works. Good luck.
