Found a possible fix on this forum:
http://www.rtcw.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?threadid=1626

"Issue

I too was experiencing start up problems. It was loading the intro with no video, only sound. Then it would crash back to desktop with no error messages. Neither single or multi would run and safe mode was no change.

I have G400, WinME, Athlon 500 128MB RAM.

What I found was that it was trying to load friggin Glide drivers.

Solution
Go into folder /Return to castle wolfenstein/gl/

Delete the two .dll files.

Copy from \Windows\System\opengl32.dll

into

/Return to castle wolfenstein/gl/

That did the trick! After hours of downloading GL drivers, Video Drivers, Direct X etc..!

The responses to this fix says it works!

Further clarification from another thread:
It was really an OPENGL prob............

Solution (I found it in a Thread! .....thx to goat!)

Go into folder /Return to castle wolfenstein/gl/

Delete/Rename the two .dll files (Openglv5.dll, Openglv3.dll).

--- For Win9x,Me !
Copy from \Windows\System\opengl32.dll

--- For WinXP,2k !
Copy from \Windows\System32\opengl32.dll
