DirectX 8.1 installing problem

I have recently had a problem trying to install directx 8.1 After downloading the exe from microsoft.com i run it and it gets as far as detecting old directx iinstallations before either just plain rebooting or coming up with an error screen with error: 0E:0028:C0011FAB in file VMM(01) + 0001143B
This is getting very annoying as i dont know anything i can do to solve the problem other than completely reinstalling windows ME. If anyone can help it would be much appreciated.

Hi jlp,

Your current video card drivers may be incompatbile with DX 8.1.

Try updating your drivers.

If this doesn't work, then change your display adapter to Standard VGA and trying to install DX 8.1.

If the install goes smoothly, you can then change back to your normal video card.
