I am running Win98/SE. When I start up I get the Windoze logo and then the machine goes into DOS. The messege appars "Type EXIT to return". I type EXIT and it does return to windoze but this is really irritiating. My system did not used to do this. How can I get it to start up in Windoze without this irritiating DOS screen coming up?

A place you can look, in case it's something running at startup
that you don't want:
go to Accessories/System Tools/System Information
go to Software Environment, then Startup Programs.
...this will list what's running at startup, and
where it is starting from.
If you don't see anything obvious, you can try temporarily
disabling some of the startup programs one by one, to see
which one is taking you to the DOS prompt. You can use the
System Configuration Utility to do this, available from the
Tools menu of your System Information screen. From the Startup
tab, you can uncheck the box next to a startup program to stop
it from running at Startup.
There's another thread running very similiar to this, with some
helpful info, called "Stuff That AutoRuns on Windows Startup",
started by Web Gecko. (it's here on the WinMe/98/95 forum)
Good Luck

Thanks for the reply Gary but it was not very helpful. Does anyone else have any ideas?

Rename your autoexec.bat file to something like autoexec.xxx and reboot. Windows does not require an autoexec.bat and config.sys to operate.

I used to see quite a bit of this with Win95. When you get to a DOS screen, type in DIR and see if you have the files
AUTOEXEC.WIN
CONFIG.WIN
If so, enter the following
rename autoexec.bat autoexec.dos
rename config.sys config.dos
rename autoexec.win autoexec.bat
rename config.win config.sys
Then reboot.
