racerbrownn: I suggest doing a forum search using any keywords that you can remember (Windows ME, startup, files, etc.)

sorry, audioya....my memory just got alittle better and i rememberd it was statica who saw the problem on someone elses post and commented how it fixed her problem also. i believe statica is a [she]. i know audioya is a man but your name was in the wrong association box in my brain.[ha ha ha, get it?]anyways dr zaius, i may repost asking for statica if she doesn't spot this and thanks for the idea about the keyword search.

i tried a keyword search of a couple things with no luck. since statica was the last post and not a username on the first post, it's hard to track. now watch when statica shows up she will be a [he] and i'll l@@k real dumb.

me be thinking i'm way off on the name now.... i thought the person was female from the impression i got from previous posts but whatever, so this is the scenario....somebody posted a problem with their me being sluggish and somebody recommended running some program which lists all programs running in the backround [might have been the three button dialog box but not sure] and this person discovered some program specific to me op sys causing the tieup. a well known user i recognized posted a reply to the discovery of the problem that that was the very reason that [her] sys was doggy lately also and [she] didn't know why. if the user i'm trying to reach was not MR statica, THEN does anybody ring any bells as to a frequent user with network experience [i've gotten posts from [her] regarding problems i had in the past.] it was an unusual username [like we get any normal ones here, HA.] hal, stop grinning and start thinking please. the post is several months old.

:D I've been trying to think of what it might be as I run ME on two machines at home and two machines at work and never had a problem where I had to disable an integral part of ME to speed it up.

it's weird as this problem is a friends and i'm trying to impress [him] with how well i get help from this forum. i ran a search for slow in the title all the way back to dec 2000 and didn't find it. i don't think it was in overclocking and i don't browse elsewhere usually. EXCEPT for hdwe! think i'll try a search there. see ya.

SHOOT, i think the person may have been jenni. i'll try a post for her and see if she is the one to help me.

Uhm, I'm not sure, but you could try running msconfig. Just open the "Run" menu on the Start Menu and type mscongig in the box. Uncheck everything that isn't absolutely necessary. ME tells you where it is located and what's running it. If it is a "system" file, leave it alone. Things like "system tray icons" and the like generally just slow things down. Things like AIM, antivirus, RealPlayer, and the like can all be loaded manually and there is no real reason for them to be loaded automatically. They just tie up system resources.
If you mess anything up, go back into msconfig and recheck the box. You can als delete the "disabled startup" folder it adds to your programs menu.
