my Zoom v92 fax modem and my Nvidia video card share the same IRQ (11) the video card works great but I have some probs with the modem connecting to to ISP...Now if I move the modem to a different slot(PCI) will it have another IRQ#??----there don't appear to be any conflicts, but it just doesn't work just right,,The modem is new and I had to go to there web site to get drivers for it because the disk that came with the card was the wrong one...thank you...GaryD

Hi mouse1,

Sounds like you have the modem in the PCI slot next to the AGP slot...that's a no-no as the two slots share the same IRQ (the 1st PCI slot is meant to be used by a video card if you aren't using a AGP card).

Try moving the modem to PCI slot 2 or 3 and see what happens. Modems tend to like being on certain IRQ's and COM ports. I'm not sure about PCI modems, but ISA modems tend to like IRQ 3 and COM2.

Is the system configured properly according to the ISP instructions?

Hopefully reboot will come by and see your post...he's the resident modem guru on this forum :D.

Hi again,

PCI slots 1 and 3 share IRQ's? Which motherboard are you using? Are you using the serial ports? If not, try disabling COM1 and COM2 in BIOS...it will free up the IRQ's and re-arrange the IRQ assignments. Might allow the two devices to be get their own IRQ's.

Hi again,

Yes, you could do that. Leave the video card where it is and move the modem to another slot, then check your IRQ assignments in Device Manager again.

You'll have to go into Windows Safe Mode and check Device Manager for multiple device entries after you're done. You only want one entry for each device.

Hi again,

To get into Safe Mode...as soon as you see "Verifying DMI Pool Data..." press and hold the Ctrl key. The Boot Menu will appear, select Windows Safe Mode and hit return.

I think you have to physically move the modem to get it assigned another IRQ...but you could try just removing the device while in Device Manager and then see if it get assigned a different IRQ after you reboot (I've never done it this way).

If you choose to move the modem to another slot and reboot, Windows will find the modem and assign it another IRQ. Sometimes, the IRQ's get moved around because of this. That's when you go into Device Manager in Safe Mode and check to see if your devices have multiple entries. Delete the extra entries (I think you just leave the bottom entry) and reboot when you're done.
