I hope you put those cab files in a directory of their own. If not you are asking for grief. If so the instructions in the above post will not work.
quote
"go to run:---Type regedit
go to Hkeylocal machine
go to software
go to microsoft
go to windows
go to current version
go to setup---(highlight)
go to source path--right click-Modify
change D to C
click ok
and close regedit"
If the files are in their own directory the c in the bold line should be changed to reflect the directory in which they reside.

The root directory of any drive only allows for so many entries and each file listed there is an entry. If you reach the limit of entries the drive will not hold any more information. For example if you had a 40 gig harddrive with only 10 gigs of data the drive would not accept any more data because there can be no root entry for it.
Maybe I said this wrong. The drive will not accept any more data that requires a root entry. It will still accept data in the directories. Besides which you run a much greater risk of overwriting files because the possibility of duplicate names is increased greatly.

Not really! As I said the number of root entries is limited. If you reach that limit the drive is considered full. Even if you have 25 gigs of space on the drive, you cannot add anything that requires a root entry.

What everyone is missing here is that he copied the ENTIRE FOLDER WIN98 onto the c: drive not the individual CABS. This procedure works very well EVERY TIME. I have done this hundreds of times with NO problems.

I'm not missing that although he said at first he copied the cab files. I posted originally that if he did not put the files in a directory of their own he was asking for grief. He asked how and I'm just trying to tell him. If he copied the entire folder to the root directory he is fine. I do it that way myself.

Yes highlight the c:\ drive in Explorer. Then look in the lower left hand corner of the status bar. You should see a number of objects listed. The number is the total of you root entries.

carl...the root entry limit is interesting. but i'm having trouble getting the total items you mentioned. if c is showing in explorer, it will not highlight unless i choose it [i'm set for single click]. if i choose it it will list 24 program names which i assume are the root entrys. but no mention down in the toolbar or anywhere i can see that mentions 24 items. am i missing something here? also, when i've copied the cabs to my hdd, i just copied the exact path they were in on the cd to the same path on the hdd. is this not correct?? thanks for any info!
