I'd like to know how to SAFELY and COMPLETELY remove Video Card Driver files in XP so I can use the Drivers that I want rather than the default drivers.
I have a Hercules GeForce 2 Ultra and tried removing the default drivers according to Hercules' directions. But those directions are for the Win 98 OS. Every time I unistall the Driver in "Device Manager" in order to go back to VGA Display Adaptor, XP AUTOMATICALLY REINSTALLS the default driver after a few seconds, I guess this is a built in safety mechanism in XP.
There was a utlity out there called "Detonator Destroyer". I never used it but it was supposed to completly remove all remnants of the Video Card driver that you previously had so that it would not cause any conflicts with the new Driver you want to install. But this is an old utility and I can't find an Win 2000/XP version available any where.
Is there an XP compatible utility that would remove my current Detonator Driver completely?? If not, how do I properly get rid of my current Driver manually and then install a new Driver?
The other problem is that all the new Detonator Drivers I see available are only Self Executable Files. I can't use the "Update Driver" method in the Device Manager with these types of files.
Why wont XP remain in the Standard VGA Display Adaptor mode so I can install the driver of my choice??

I have a P III 1000, GeForce 2 Ultra, SB Live 5.1, 384 MB Ram, Ultra ATA 100 Controller.

The drivers XP is loading are the standard drivers for all video cards.
It installs them just so you'll get video.
Uninstalling drivers refers to previous drivers you've installed and not the default drivers the OS installs.
If,for example, you had a previous card installed and now you wanted to change cards, you would uninstall the previous drivers of the card and remove the device in device manager.
You would then shut down the computer, install the new card, reboot, let Windows detect the device and Windows would install default drivers,it is then that you install the drivers for your new card and Windows, now knows the device and the drivers that run it,Windows will now use the new drivers and will keep it's default drivers in a safe place until you need to or decide to upgrade the drivers or video card.
So go ahead and install the video card and start the computer,XP will recognize the new hardware and will ask for the drivers,if the drivers come with a install program, simply install the drivers and reboot.

After rereading your post,I see you're simply trying to upgrade the drivers, simply go ahead and install them,XP will or may tell you the drivers are not signed or certified, but that's okay, the drivers you install through the EXE file will simply replace the drivers XP has installed.
It's best prior to installing to shut down all running programs(anti-virus,etc.)
