Hey there!!
Thanks for taking the time to read my post first off!
Now on to the fun part, my problem :D

- 1st Problem -
I have no sound coming out of my internal speaker?
I have a PCChips M817 motherbaord and a case with an internal speaker, now I have installed all the drivers, turned on/off the support for onboard sound in the BIOS setting, installed the supplied drivers, installed the updated drivers, everything I could think of and there is no sound (with the exception of the modem) coming out of the speaker? Now I have NO conflicts in my devices manager, but I did notice that under the "Sound, video, game controllers" there was only the "Wave device for Fax Modem" and nothing elese, compared to my other computers where there is at least 3 other thibngs listed. And also if it's any importance, I also don't have the volume control in the task bar.

- 2nd Problem -
The monito goes to sleep after 30min. I can't find anywhere to adjust this? I went to the "Power Managment" settings, and only "Turn off Hard disks" and "System stand by" are the only options, compared to my other computers that have "Monitor Shutdown".

Please help!?!?
Thanks!!!!!

;) Shaun

P.S. Whene I refer to my "Other computers", I mean Store Baught ones already set up out of the box :D
this is my first coimputer that I have built myself.

Ok, with the sound, did you make sure you plugged the internal speaker into the right place? All the internal plugins (HD LED, Power lead) are stuck together on the MB and it can be confusing if you don't look very carefully. If that isn't the problem, then I'd suspect the MB. And not to bad mouth your MB, but PCChips isn't one of the better brands from what I hear :(

With the power setting, that is where it is supposed to be...maybe try getting the newest driver for your display adapter. Also try setting the scheme to 'always on'

The internal speaker only makes the beep when you start your computer, it has nothing to do with your system sounds and sound card/on board sound. You need a set of speakers to connect to your sound card.

Set your system standby to never.

Thanks, but no thanks Leef,
I didn't wanna hear my MB is crap :D

But I'll keep that in mind when I get to the Pulling my Hair out part ;)

HAL, that makes sense, I do get the beeps, so obviously it works. And the MB comes with a onboard sound card, but when I plug in External Speakers, no sound comes out, I guess I didn't specify that part. And I'll try the Never Standby and see if works, I'll keep ya posted to my progress.

Thanks for the input!!
Shaun :p

Sorry, misunderstood you :)

Did you switch the jumpers for the onboard sound to disable it...if it has any?

If youare using the onboard sound you will first have to enable it in the bois set up. Now since you only have one thing listed in the device manager (wave device) this would mean that the sound card is not installed. If you did enable the sound card and it is not detected automatically in windows you can go to add new hardware, choose your device manually and point the setup to the sound card drivers. You should now have it listed under sound and game controllers in the device manager, also the speaker will now be displayed in you system tray.

Leef, it does have onboard sound, but there is no jumpers to enable/disable it.
So I'm assuming it's enabled?

Mech, onboard sound is enabled in the BIOS settings, and I have tried just installing a generic wave device for a soundcard and it didn't work. But I'll keep trying.

Thanks!

Remove the generic wave device. Your motherboard should have come with a CD. Run that and there should be a setup for the onboard sound.

Akio

I had a similar problem with the onboard sound when building a PC, turns out i was not using powered speakers, learnt a lesson there as i spent ages unloading and loading drivers.

Same here, DougL. Wasted many hours before I realized that some sound cards REQUIRE amplified speakers.

HAL, I did remove the generic wave device, and tried many, many times to install the sound card drivers from the CD that came w/ the MB. But, every time I installed them it would get to the end and report an error and said it could not install the driver for device, blah, blah, blah. Well I went to the PCChips website last night and got the latest driver for the sound, installed it, and voila!! I got sound, kinda. The computer recognizes it and all, and I got the speaker in the task bar :D

I plugged in my speakers and no sound comes out? But then I came here and saw Doug's post, so that must be it! My speakers ARE NOT externally powered. So I'll get some speakers that have there own powere source and let ya all know how it works.

Thanks guys for the help!!!
Shaun :p

P.S. The monitor still goes to sleep by itself after 30min?? I turned the Power Managment setting to "Always On", changed BIOS setting, there is NOTHING to tell the monitor when to go to sleep. I really need this thing to to wait at least an hour or two before it shuts down, it gets really anoying.

Go back to the power management settings in the control panel and
set them all to "never" and see if this works.

Mech, already tried that, no luck :(

Hi Akio,

Have you tried looking through the monitor menu (ie: do the buttons on the monitor access an on screen menu?) for a power saving or sleep timer setting?

What about going into Device Manager and checking the monitor properties as well as the video card properties.

Or maybe even the Display Properties (right click on the desktop and choose properties)> Settings> Advanced. Depending on which video card you're using, you may find some extra options here.

Which monitor and video card are you using?

Cricket, already tried all of that, no luck :(
And my monitor is a CTX VL700, and my graphics card is a NVIDIA TNT 8mb.

Thanks...

Your problem with the moniter shutting down is probably related to the PC Chips
motherboard. These board are not quality boards. One of the circuits on it probly heats up over a period of time. Do yourself a favor down the road and start a build with a quality board.
