After successfully running XP Pro for several weeks, Today I noticed when I save a jpeg file off the web it saves with a .jpe extention. The save as box says it will be saved as a jpg file. If I type .jpg after the file name it does save it properly then. I can also rename the file with the jpg extention. I haven't installed any new software lately and none of my program associations seems to be affected. I guess my question is where would I go to change this behavior. I didn't see any under file types in the folder options window that seemed improper.

Do you have Quick TIme installed on that machine? It has a tendancy to change the file associations for you, ESPECIALLY with jpg files. I had the same problem which also included my jpg images opening with Quick Time instead of the original default. If you uninstall Quick Time my guess is that the jpg problem will go away anf the jpg's will be just fine.

Thanks Azscary for the quick response.....I think that my Quicktime did update itself a few days ago. About the time this started. I like quicktime and do use the Movie Player ocasionaly. But I think give your suggestion a try. I'll post back. Thanks Again.

Let me know what happens. You can always reinstall it later in an earlier version and just tell the update to go away!

That didn't do it. Although I strongly suspect you are correct. I wonder where in the registry these save as preferences are. I'll keep looking and post back if i find something. Thanks

Is XP similar to Win 2000? If so, click on MY COMPUTER and then TOOLS>FOLDER OPTIONS>FILE TYPES and you should be able to change the defaults there.

I looked in folder options and didn't see anything that would apply. I don't see anything in the registry that would appear to change this. It seems odd that it would change the file as you save it but not change the "save as" dialogue.

My experience is that computers seem to attract gremlins. Have you consulted an Exorcist??? LOL:D

LMAO............
I don't seem to have very many problems, but when I do it always seems to be something weird no one has ever heard of. I'll figure it out one way or another.

Amazingly enough I have searched for several hours and I have found where numerous other people have had the same problem, but haven't seen found a solution yet. Most of them report that it started after installing one version of Netscape or another. I do keep Netscape for access to some online classes I have been taking that do not support anything newer than pre SP1 IE5. I have tried uninstalling Netscape. I have run chkdsk /r. I think I have personally read my entire Registry I haven't a clue as to why this is occurring. I guess its probably time to reformat and reinstall, but I think I'll give it a few more days to at least figure out what other Browser I might be able to run alongside of IE6 without causing this.

Okay, my turn with same problem. Jpegs (jpgs) now save out by default in IE as 'jpe'. Just happened out of the blue. Have run several adware and spyware programs. Nothing sorts it out. What's up? Netscape 7.2 had been running for several weeks. No problem. No new QT install.
