View Full Version : Rebooting for no reason every 90 minutes...

This is a strange problem I'm having. Just about every hour and 1/2, my computer just reboots. Doesn't shut down or anything. I thought it my be a heat issue, but my power source fan and chip fan are running fine. I'm assuming my case fan is OK too. I ran "motherboard monitor" (temp gauge) and went into the bios and checked the temp. Both showed about 80F. My computer has always run at this temp.... I ran an "adaware scan" and I frequently update NAV and run scans with that.
The only change I made recently was upgrade from win 98 to win 98SE.
Any ideas? It's driving me nuts!

Hi Glenn,
Have you tried disabling power management in windows and/or the bios to see if that helps? Also did you install any new software or hardware recently? HTH

Thanks for the response! I forgot to mention that I disabled the power mangement stuff in the control pannel and I checked the BIOS and the power settings looked normal to me.
The only thing I installed after upgrading was a new version of "enternet". That's what I use to connect to my DSL with. Also, after the install, my PPPoE adapter was corrupt, so I removed that via "harware profile", rebooted and installed a new one...
I'm really stumped with this one! Especially since it happens at pretty regular intervals.... I wonder if I have some sort of trojan on my machine? I run a firewall though (ZoneAlarm), so I would think the chances of that are slim...

UPDATE!
The computer only reboots when connected to the internet and running IE for an uninterupted 90 minutes. My girlfriend was using the machine on Friday evening; e-mailing and downloading music. She was on the machine for over and hour and a 1/2....no problem. Saturday night, I ran a scan disk and a defrag and the machine did not reboot. Last night, I was on the net, using IE,....90 minutes in...reboot...

Have you tried reinstalling IE, or upgrading to IE6 if you don't have it? Also, try reinstalling the drivers for your ethernet card and maybe even the TCP/IP protocols.

I haven't tried any of those..... Do you think doing a "windows update" will help anything?

Problem solved! I think it had to do with my network card and software that I was using to connect to DSL with. I got a linksys 4 port for Christmas and my rebooting troubles are gone!
