can someone tell me how to correct modem problem, java script keeps popping up win98,cannot get that pc online

It would help to know the make of computer, operating system, make and model of the modem, software installed, any software that may have been installed immediately before the modem stopped connecting(if it ever did), any lightning strikes or anything else that might be relevant. What is the exact error message that is popping up? ;)
