I have been working on my sisters puter for 2 days and am stumped.
The system is an old packard bell with a celly 300 cashless. It will
install windows untill the last start and then give this message;c/windows/
system/vmm32vxd not found can not load, restart. this stops the load process
and when you try to install windows again it goes fine till the last restart.

I have tried a different HDD and a different cdrom. could the mobo be going south? or a virus mabe?

Thanks in advance for all help.

to be clear, are you reinstalling windows or just booting up the pc as usual when you get the error. also, the virtual memory manager is the file that holds ALL the drivers for configuring the hardware and software of the pc that is being booted up. if you are not doing a reinstall, then you may need to or at least copy the damaged or missing folder in dos to the hdd. just my opinion but it's odd that a different hdd has the same error though, makes me think you may be having hardware issues. let's see what other takers we get on this problem and good luck.

Its a reinstall racer and the HDD worked perfectly in the other puter it was in.
Her cdrom vibrated badly so I changed it out too same error.

ummm... the hdd worked fine in the other pc it was in? did you erase the windows folder or at least the enum key to remove any trace of the other pc's settings from the hdd before you swapped. you might try booting to dos and doing a format to erase any data that might be hanging around to cause conflicts.

this is a long shot BUT...you don't by chance have a umax scanner plugged into that pc do you? umax driver has a conflict with windows and a download from their website fixes the problem. like you are really going to get this lucky right?

update;
I just swaped the hard drive that gave the errors into another puter and loaded
windows with no problems.
So I think it is safe to say it is the motherboard or cpu or both.

ps. nosir racer I dont have a scaner attached.

nice job cricket, i liked the site detailing the backup procedure which i should try. the umax site was very good also. p.s.no_nota...don't rule out a bad ram chip or powersupply problems before you trash the mb/cpu. i you can, swap parts around to see if you can narrow down the fault so we can all see.

Will do racer,Sis got a puter vid camera that sits on top of the monitor recently and I bet it taxed the ram. The ram chip will be next on the list.

i didn't think you would get that lucky but it was worth a try. these things certainly try a sane persons patience, huh.
