win98 start menu error

good day eh
i've got win98 on my puter
other day tried to edit start menu with
start-->settings-->taskbar&start menu-->start menu tab-->advanced
it shows explorer briefly, then gives an error

"this program has performed an illegal operation and will be shutdown"
details says "explorer caused an invalid page fault in module OLE322.DLL at 015f:7ff3f080"

it does the same thing every time, same module and (hexidecimal?) location.
done several cold and warm boots, all with same results
any suggestions how to fix this?
