Hi all,
I was wondering how to backup the registry in WIN98 SE. Also how do you restore the registry if you have a problem? Thanks for any help.

Hi spicychicken
The links in the post above should work like a charm.
But if you're not comfortable editing the registry,
you can also get there with menu selections.
Go to Accessories/System Tools/System Information
and after SysInfo gets started, select "Registry Checker"
from the "Tools" menu. That will both scan the registry
for errors and offer to back it up (to your hard drive).
To Restore, boot to DOS (whether from the Start/Shutdown menu,
floppy disk, or CD) and type scanreg/restore from the C: (or whatever
hard drive) prompt. ...then choose which date you want to restore.

Excellent - thanks for the help guys
START > RUN type SCANREGW click OK twice and your registry is backed up..
To Restore has already been answered but sometimes it is better to have the registry FIXED - DOS Prompt = type SCANREG /FIX enter..

And, if you were not aware, the registry (and system.ini and win.ini) is being backed up automatically on the first boot of each day.
(as long as you have a task called Scanreg, running (MSCONFIG to confirm))

Copy system.dat and user.dat to your backup copy (should be about 8 MB in 98SE.)
If something runs afoul, just overwrite these two files. If you are constantly swapping parts and software in and out of your computer, don't wait too long to back up these files, as the restoration will be dated for the specific configuration that you had on that day.;)

Why would you want to copy the files, when you can use standard Win98 features like Scanregw and Scanreg/Restore?
If you need to maintain more backups, you can change the INI file, or just save the appropriate Cab file.

There are multiple ways of achieving the same ends. Pick a key, any key...and besides, where do you think system.da0 is generated from?
There ain't no SYSTEM.DA0 noor a USER.DA0 in windows 98 - this has been taken out since SCANREG and SCANREGW had been invented.. think you are running Win95 there ..

aha... i can't make up my mind. which command is better, fix or restore? and what is the difference??
The FIX command is there if the RESTORE option for whatever reason doesn't work ..
Fix command will check the entire registry against hardware and also against program files and drivers - it will remove any not actual or bad entries - it will make it possible to get out of strange situations where even RESTORE will not work..
It will aslo rEBUILD your registry and tell you if there was any Error in the registry ..

There is indeed two HIDDEN files under C:\Windows , Start>Find>user.dat , Start>Find>system.dat In the spirit of helping somebody out with their question, I was merely offering an alternative. Personally, I want to have as much control over the operating system as possible.
Yes sure there are USER.DAT and SYSTEM.DAT but not SYSTEM.DA0 as you posted..
