Zone alarm question

Is zone alarm compatible with Norton System Works 2002?

No problems with win98se + zonealarm + norton sytem works 2002
But I didn't install all tools of norton, I intalled nav, disk doctor, and win doctor.

I personally don't know of any incompatibilities between the two. I don't use Norton's System Works but I do use ZoneAlarm.

I don't run ZoneAlarm at startup, rather I start it up only if I go on-line and turn it off when I'm off-line. With Norton's, I believe you have the option of running the tools at startup (to run in background) or you can just run them when you want to.

Personally, I wouldn't run anything from the System Works but the antivirus in background as I've seen the other applications take up a lot of system resources and drag down PC performance.

Doesn't the latest version of Norton System Works come with the Norton Firewall already?

Cricket: Thanks for reminding me not to have all of Norton's stuff turned on in the start up menu. In a prior NSW my crash guard kept putting me in so many crashes I had to disable it. Think I'll turn off the Clean Sweep, Smart Sweep, Internet Sweep etc.

I've also been running both Zone Alarm and Norton System Works 2002 under Windows 98 without any problems.

Waiting........I used System works and just browsed the CD amd installed the items I wanted but I didn't install the whole System Works program because it uses alot of memory and really drags down the computer. I used Zone Alarm with it as well and had no problems the only problems I had were due to using the complete System works program. I recommend just browsing the CD and installing the programs you want.

Mark: Its interesting that your NSW 2002 and Win98 are working fine with Zone Alarm... My question is: Since your using NSW 2002---why are you not using Norton's Personal Firewall? Just curious.

KRO316: Thanks for letting me know of yur success using ZoneAlarm with NSW-2002. Why did you go with ZoneAlarm? And not Norton's Personal Firewall Program?

I really loaded my computer up with NSW - 2002. I just turn off most of Nortons Stuff in the Start Up Menu. When its time to use Norton's Utility--I use it, ....But its usually disabled.....

Norton also included a GoBack feature which has made life a lot easier to cover my computer blunders. Thank you for your input.

Are people using ZoneAlarm because its supposed to be free?

Norton's Personal Firewall did not come with my version of System Works (NSW 2002 - Professional Edition). Even if it did, I would not use it. I've read numerous reviews of firewalls, and every time Zone Alarm was rated the best. In fact, one very detailed technical review said most of the commercial firewall programs, including Norton's, did a poor job of protecting computers. They could be easily fooled by programs "pretending" to be well-known legitimate programs that you would want to access the internet, such as MS-Internet Explorer, etc. Zone Alarm was not vulnerable to that type of disguised trojan horse. That review was written in early 2001, I don't know if Norton has fixed that vulnerabilty.

Would a firewall prevent worms from coming in through AOL e-mail ? I use Norton antivirus and keep the definations up to date, but I still got 3 kak worms through an E-mail group I belong to. The worms came right in the E-mail, not in any attachments. Could a firewall have prevented this ? thanks in advance.

I don't believe that a firewall would have prevented you from getting those worms/trojans as most come into your PC attached to e-mail. A software firewall is designed to plug the open holes/ports in the OS and networking software.

What version of Norton AV do you have? I thought the current version does scans of the e-mail attachments to prevent the sort of thing that happened to you. Do you have the e-mail function enabled?

With the proper configuration, Zone Alarm also will not allow your programs to access the net unless you say so. So if you had d/l'd a free program with a hidden agenda, Zone Alarm will keep it from sending out info.

Thanks everyone for your response. Is there anything I can do that will allow me to use AOL, and Norton, and be protected from these worms. I do have e mail protect enabled.

Waverider has a good point. How can we use AOL isp with Norton's AntiVirus and be protected from worms.......Someone out there must know. My solution was to quit using AOL.
