View Full Version : Restart Problem

I use Win98se and I have a restart or reboot problem. The pc shuts down fine.
When I need to reboot or restart, the pc shuts down and then acts like it wants to restart, but doesn't. The HDD light stays on and the monitor stays black. The only way out of this is to turn the main switch off at the p/s and then on again and then go through a normal bootup.
I should mention that I do not get the one beep from the mobo when it attempts to start when I use the restart or reboot option.
I have d/l'd the patches from MS and they haven't helped with this problem.
Can someone point me in the proper direction to start fixing this problem?
Thanks in advance.

Did you update and run an antivirus?
This could be the culprit.

Sorry hirise,
I use PC-Cillin and auto updates. Is this what you meant?
Or are you saying to run my AV to see if I have a virus?

Carl, does it do it everytime? Try it in "safe mode" and see if problem continues. You already disabled fast shutdown, right? MS has a handy check list . Had this problem once and it was the exit and startup sound schemes, which I no longer use. Go to their site and under support type "fast shutdown" under Win98. It will bring up several checks besides just "fast". Seems sorta like a device driver, but...

Sarge,
Thats quite a link. Froze the browser and nothing on the page.

This is weird. Now I'm back at your post and the link is gone.
I do have fast-shutdown disabled.
I search the MS site and see what I can find. Hope they don't use big words.

Just disable fast shutdown so drivers will be unitialized. Start, prog, acc, system tools, system info. On tools menu click system config utility. On general tab, click advanced, then check "disable fast shutdown" and reboot.
What link? You drinking on Sunday again? :D

Sarge,
This is interesting. When I first read your post, there was a link to MS. And I'm not drinking, maybe I should.:D
Went to Regedit as per the MS site and the Value is "0". Went to System Info as you said and there is not an option to enable or disable fast shutdown.
There were some other things over at MS that cause problems, so I'll research them all.
Haven't tried restart in safemode, might do that first.
Thanks Sarge.

Carl, if you follow the yellow brick road above, it will take you to "disable..." Mine already has it checked and I didn't do it; perhaps it's defaulted with a check?
Seen anymore "links" lately??

This Link (http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=http://support.microsoft.com/support/windows/tshoot) might be helpful. Hope so, it helped me.;)

Found the problem and highrise was onto it.
I have PC-Cillin start at startup because of the web features. I unchecked those in msconfig so that they wouldn't be running, and restart works fine.
Highrise,
Thank you.
Sarge,
Can't explain. I swear to you that there was a link to MS in that post.
I know I'm close to the edge, but you don't have to push. :D

Carl, that's why I asked if you tried in Safe Mode. Anti-virus wouldn't be loading then...

Sarge,
Is the box you're talking about? That is if I can get it here.
Sorry Sarge. Can't get it here.

I think I'll only take a little credit.
There are so many people on here with a lot more experience than
myself......That is what makes this place so great.
