god i have had so many software installs screwup in the last two weeks. my install of winzip 8 linked itself to even the cab files on the win98se cd. i wanted to copy the cabinet files to the options folder for simplicity but they are associated as winzip files. what is the step by step way to change the assoc in windows. i made the change in the winzip program but when i search the folder options for file types, i don't see a listing for cab files??

Having cabs associated w/ winzip shouldn't stop you from copying them to your Option folder.

If you can explaix a bit more, maybe I can help.

.cab (WinZip file) is listed in my floder options/file types dialogue.

I do not think you will find a folder named cab files. Maybe you copied them over at one time so do a search for the WIN98 folder. If you have it, more than likely the cab files are there. HTH

to edrod13, the c:\windows\options folder shows cabs when they are present. i have seen them there on earlier transfers. on the win98se cd the cabinet files are in the win98 folder. thanks for the input.

to nightfishing, i'm used to seeing the cabinet files on the win98se cd and having them displayed as winzip files threw me. i will try a transfer to the options folder and see how they arrive. it's just that if they stay winzip, then windows will probably not recognise them if and when it searches for update cabs for software.

quick add-on, cabs is gone from the listing of file types on my pc but winzip is there near the bottom.

yeah, that worked like crap. i copied the cab files over and they showed to be cab during the transfer but were renamed winzip once they arrived in the options\cabs folder. how the heck do i get windows to reassign the cabinet type to these files???

I don't understand the problem. My cab files reside on my hard disk, they are associated with zipmagic, and windows has no problem accessing my cab files.
Cab files show up in powerdesk and windows explorer alike as icons with the zipmagic thingy, but this is really cosmetic.

Are you saying that windows cannot access your cabs?

i assumed that because the files had the wrong type, then windows would not be able to locate them when it needed to. if it works for you then i'll not worry about it. thankx!
