Sounds like it might be an IRQ issue. Check in device manager and see if you have any exclamation marks after you cancel the hardware wizard. And then also check your IRQ assignments. HTH

That message sometime occurs if various components of another device need the drivers specific for that feature. This is particularly true in sound cards that have multiple functions. My guess is that when you reinstalled the sound drivers you may have done it from a download instead of the original disk or you may have enabled functions not used in the previous installation. If this is true insert the original disk and then update the driver in Device Manager and point it at the disk.

Thank you for the quick response, as far as I can tell there is no IRQ issue there is no exclamation marks if I cancel hardware wizard, I loaded the drivers from the Intel mobo disk( onboard sound), How can I update the drivers for on board sound(Intel vc820 mobo)?? Thank you... GaryD.

If this is same system used before reformatting, it's not an update driver issue. You have something in device manager...is video card original or was it added later on before reformatting, any listing for "pci communication device"?

What about a wave device for modem. Does the message come up every time you reboot and does it not find the driver it asks for?

It comes up everytime I boot/reboot and if I dont cancel and go ahead and
look for the drivers for unknown device I get a quotation mark at the unknown device in device manager...The video card is new, but was installed before I reformatted, the modem is listed but not "pci communication device"...I'm still looking for the culpret...Maybe a new modem will do the trick..Thank you...GaryD.

I think I will do another F-Disk and format it again and see if I can remmidy the problem that way....I have feeling it is the modem that is causing the whole thing... dadgum v92 Zoom...will post out come....Thank you GaryD.

If you reformatted you need to add the drivers for new card, just as you did when installed it originally. You're wasting time doing another fdisk/format, as same question marks will show up again.

I may not have to reformat this thing....The problem I think is the modem
because I have had trouble with it ever since I installed it...I think I returned the wrong one and sent the divers for this modem with the one I reurned..I just ordered a new one a diamond supra express 56k external...I'm gonna try that one before I do anything with this computer...

Insert the VC820 Cdrom and then let windows search for the drivers on there - they are ALL ON THE DISK otherwise you can download them at WWW.INTEL.COM

If you run Win98 the supra will be detected as it is plug and play -use the same one here. otherwise click on Refresh in device manager and this will then see your modem..if this is a USB it's even easier plug it in have the driver disk ready - done..
