View Full Version : Celeron 500MHz
I want to upgrade my slot 1 PII 300MHz, which is the motherboard's limit(mobo manual), to a celeron 500MHz, which on Biostar's website said that with a bios upgrade, the mobo will accept a celeron up to 500MHz. It would seem that if a mobo can handle a certain speed, just a bios upgrade would not be able to increase it? Would the speed actually increase(w/celeron of course)? Gaming on this machine is horrid and I am trying anything to improve performance.
Now about the bios, is it worth upgrading to be able to run the celeron? I already corrupted the bios in my new dragon, and I'm trying not to take that path again.
And if the upgrade would be worth it, where would I find a celeron 500Mhz. I know they would be cheap, but I can't seem to find one.

I think you have a "jumperless" board so you probably need the bios upgrade to get the higher multiplyer settings in the bios. I use a Cely 500 on a Soyo 6BA board. You should notice an improvement in performance over your PII though it's not a fast chip by today's standards.
You should be able to find a Cely 500 on ebay. I seem to recall there was a website that sold older cpus but I can't remember the name. Maybe someone else will.
Well, I do have jumper for cpu clock. Goes from 200 to 233 to 266 to 300MHz. Now I'm trying to figure out how the set this jumper if I get a celeron.
Also would upgrading my bios be safe? This is an old motherboard and its model is discontinued.

The bios flash is safe if done right with the right bios update.
You need to track down a manual or more info on your board. You should be able to do this if you're persistent.
The 500 cpu speed is this equation: 66(7.5)=500 (approx)
The 66 is your cpu bus and 7.5 is your multiplyer setting. You need to find where to change these settings. Sounds like the jumper you found is the multiplyer.
There are two sets of jumpers. The manual says one is for the "CPU Core Voltage Select" and the other says "Intel CPU Clock Select". I am clueless when it comes to overclocking and that sort of stuff, would I need to change the voltage?
Also, is it possible to try to overclock the PII, or not worth the time?
I found a Celeron 600MHz with the slot 1 adapter for around $25 used. Would this sound ok, or stay away from the adapters?

The voltage jumper is something different all together. You probably will have to change the voltage setting according to the specs of the Cely cpu, which you can look up online.
I can't say that board will support the Cely 600 without knowing more so your best best is to locate a manual. You can't really go any further with out it.
As far as overclocking goes, any cpu can be overclocked and Toaster is really your best source of info for that older PII.
