Anyone ever try this?
http://www.the-scream.co.uk/html/resources/ie_reg_tweak.html
Does editing the decimal value mean deleting entire line and just have the 6 or 8 on line by itself?

Hi Sarge...I'm willing to try about anything, so last night I edited the registry per the links instructions. I have DEFINITELY noticed a difference in page loading times!!!! Although I have DSL it hangs occasionally, or loads sluggishly. Since I implemented this tweak about 90% of my sites are opening almost immediately. Others mileage may differ, but from me to you thanks for the link!

Thanks man, I definately noticed a speed increase!

Congrats. From what I gather, IE 5.5 and 6.0 don't need the tweak. I use 6.0 and even if I had an earlier version, I don't feel froggy enough to jump. Haven't had much luck lately at tweaking w/o causing problems.

I tried it on IE 6.0 then went to some sites that always lag and its way quicker I did have to add the keys manually but there are instructions for that to
thanks for the tip

o.k, been running this tweak for a few days and it is amazing!!! I'm on I.E. 5.5 and the decrease in page loading times is absolutely stunning (ex: of total times: 2 seconds from pcmech to ebay....3 seconds from ebay to cdrlabs....2.5 seconds from cdrlabs to msnbc...1 second to pcforest...1 second to pentstar systems...etc, etc)) Best tweak I've come across in ages!!! Thanks again.

Looks interesting. Would someone who has done it show how it should look.
I'm with Sarge. I've edited the registry many a time, but the "decimal 6 or 8" throws me.
Thank you,
Carl

Wow, I just did the tweak and it actually works pretty well. I'm using IE6 with WinXP. Here's what you need to add.
Go to
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\MICROSOFT\WINDOWS\CURRENTVERSION\INTERNET SETTINGS
Add (as DWORD) or change these:
MaxConnectionsPerServer 6
MaxConnectionsPer1_0Server 8
Thanks Sarge!

Carl, just follow instructions at site. I asked the original question before even trying it. When you right click the value and select modify, it brings up the little window. Change the # to desired, select "decimal" and exit out. IE 6.0 already has one with tweaked #, just change other (1st entry) to a 6. Mine was at 4. BTW, didn't notice much using dsl, but 56k users might, according to above posts.

I'm using DSL as well a noticed a slight difference.

Now that it's so easy, I'm thinking about tinkering with the #'s, for testing purposes.

I'm going to have to add the strings also. I use IE6 and they're not there.

Mine were on 6.0, but then I upgraded from 5.5. Maybe they carried over. Carl, backup the Reg first if you're adding. You've had enough problems lately ;)

Sarge,
I added the strings and #'s. I do see a noticable difference.

I was wondering if there was anything like this in the registry for ie 6?
Any help would be great.

Hi Ridese33, welcome to the PC Mech forums!

I'm using dsl and theres a noticable difference on certian sites I frequent that used to load slow

I am running 5.01 SP2 and would like to tweak my settings because dial-up sucks. Did any of you back-up the registry like the site reccomended or should I just jump into it. TIA

Always back up Registry, just in case. It's a simple procedure and fast. Just follow the yellow brick road, encounter no witches, and it will work.
edrod, let us know if it improves yours.

SARGE,
Will do, I get off late but will post ASAP. I would like to hear from other dial-up users and see what they encountered. TIA

I added the DWORD strings in ie 6.0 and i noticed that i was a bit faster. My computer seems to stall a bit right at the beginning but once the data start moving it goes nice and fast now. Any idea on how to get rid of the stall???
Thanks a bunch!
SARGE
01-31-2002, 11:06 PM
Maybe it's breaking in, getting used to new settings, stunned that someone figured out how to make it work better. To answer your question, I don't know about the stall. Was lucky to even stumble across this tweak. ;)

I'm all new at this. fresh out of stupid class..never never never thought i be brave enough to TWEAK or mess with anything...i used to be afraid to change a password in fear to freaking mess things up.....Sarge, i have IE6.0 and i did exactly what the link said to do. even had to add the 2 "thingies" to the directory..HAHAHAHA
now that its done, i have to wear a resporator, there is smoke coming from my MOTHERBOARD it goes so fast. Holy Moly...i didnt think it would be this fast..... AWESOME..... !!!!!

Guess I'll try it on dialup and see if I see what you all do.

Here's a couple notes to check.
Went back into the registry to check my settings. The one to be set at 8 changed to 6. The other changed to 0 and both read hexidecimal. Changed back to the settings for the tweak and everything so far has stayed the same.
Another note. While in the registry, go down and check History. You might be surprised to see all the folders for spyware that is supposed to be removed by AdAware. I deleted doubleclick, Ad-flow, Valueclick, to name a few.

I know YOU are the one who usually hands these out but I just gotta say AMEN. I am dancing a jig as a type. This tweak even helped us in the 7th level of AOHell. It almost makes dialup a borderline pleasurable experience. Greatest tweak ever. Really belongs in the HOF.
Thanks a ton!!!!

Anyone ever try this?
LOL.....Well Sarge, I second the nomination for a Hall Of Fame entry. Even though I have DSL this tweak has made my browsing experience infinitely more enjoyable. And yes, even AOL has gotten a bit of a kick in the arse. Any thoughts of a presidential bid in 2005? You've got my vote!

I would imagine the dial up gets helped a lot as I tried it with my cable connection and do notice an increase in speed.

I provided the link, and waited the longest to try it myself. I messed up the Registry in the past and had a sweet, kind, lovable, beautiful, and very good-natured woman come unglued over her Gateway, so I'm hesitant in these endeavors. :D :D
Glad it worked for everyone who tried it.

The speed diff is obviously noticeable..
I get some graphics not load properly ( I got bad bandwidth on my dialup connect) but I can live with that..well done Sarge..

Well, just to make it 600 posts Sarge. I followed the instructions faithfully but the pages woudn't even load afterwards.I've got cable.
Did it work for anyone with cable?
Hal9000 posted that he got faster page loads and he is using cable. I also have tried it and noticed increase speed.

Works great!
I'm on dialup and usually connect somewhere in the mid to high 40s... I've noticed an increase in page loads!
I vote for this thread to be placed in the HOF!
Thanks SARGE! :D

Well, I tried it on a dialup and noticed little difference. But I've been using DSL so judgment may be clouded. Perhaps I forgot how long things used to load on dialup compared to the tweak.

LOL.. I went in to the registry to try this out, and what do you know.. instead of saying 2 and 4 (the windows default) they both say 99! I'm guessing I found this out earlier and wasn't satisfied with 6 and 8 :D

When I figure out exactly what the #'s do (in layman's terms) I'll tinker with them and try different values, just to see what happens. I'm now using the suggested values.

Selected modify on each and changed the value to "a" without the quotation marks. This sets both to a 10. Now I notice a difference. :)

The way I understand this works is you basically make more socket connections when you access a web site so obviously get more bandwidth. Web sites will hate you but hey, tell someone who cares..
The default for windows is 2/4 versus 6/8 as suggested here. You can try higher values but need to lower the values (IMO anything higher than the windows default is BETTER) if you find graphics fail to load properly. Personally I can live w/o the odd graphic loading occassionally for the increase in speed.
Hey SARGE,
Checked mine and set it at 64 It flies!!! Like changing channels on a TV. Of course I have cable.
Michael
02-11-2002, 12:48 AM
Changed values from 8/6 to 10/8. Everything's stable, but I can't tell if it's any faster. Sarge, you stated you put an "a" in for values which changes them to "10". Was this a typo? My editing box won't even accept a letter. Again, this is the best overall tweak ever!!!!
SARGE
02-11-2002, 08:07 AM
Yes, an a, then select decimal. If you put a 10, it adds to existing value (8 becomes 18). I'm no math wizzo

After you get to the windows sub root dir
the the two subs under windows are
1 current version
2 Internet settings(one icon "default"
In the current version there is also a folder
called internet settings which were I created the maxconnections
strings.
Question do you del the proxy or will the program find these
in folder curent version?
Cheers

How do you undo the changes? I tried this trick only to find my Internet connection being slower or not transmitting at all. :(

Nuclear Krusader , download this program & you can select your method of connecting from the 3rd line , then down the bottom click on Optimal , then Apply .
With a bit of luck , this will sort your's out .
From File , you can backup the before & after changes .
