View Full Version : OE Virus Cancel?

I check my email a few minutes ago and find a message with the subject "Re:", from a long address that ends in .jp, with no body text and an attatched script... obviously a virus. I have the Preview pane open so Outlook Express automatically tries to open the attatched script, it prompts me with the "Open or Save?" dialog box. Not wanting to do either, I click Cancel and the prompt disapears and nothing happens. I'm running a virus scan now just to be safe, but what did clicking Cancel do? Run the script or nothing at all?
Mods: I'm not sure if this should be in General Software because it's about OE or in here because it's about a virus. Please move it if needed.
Thanks.

If I were you, I'd do this:
1) Check if my antivirus is updated and then run an extensive scan of your system
2) Go to http://housecall.antivirus.com/
3) Then if I still cant find any virus reports, I would forward the mail to a hotmail accnt
All vbs scripts arent virii, it is possible that it is a harmless one; but odds are against you unfortunately.
Save the vbs file as a txt file and open it and see what it does.

Thanks Statica, it was a .js JavaScript file so I'll save it from my Hotmail address and see exactly what it is.
The scan showed no virus and I checked my Temp. Internet Files folder and the script was not saved, so I'm guessing the "Cancel" button does the same thing as it does when you click to download any other file, it cancels the action and doesn't download it.

Ahh ok .js .. well thats a different beast altogether. No too many core virii are .js (why enter through the chimney when you can enter thru the open door with .vbs) .. most of the .js code is harmless really. I'd really be surprised if it was anything more than basic "write" code, so that the mail can get through a lot of spam filters.
