Hi,
I have just installed directx 8.1 and now win 98 hangs on startup.
I did a selective startup and found that it stops after loading vwm2x2d.386
trouble is I don't know what to do next???
Any help is appreciated!!

How did you do the dx8 install?
you may want to use a freeware dealie called 'direct x buster' to uninstall dx and then do a clean install. This has worked for me.
good luck,
drew
oops, as far as what to do now, will it boot in 'safe mode'? This may allow you to do the above, and/or trying to set other parameters like lowering screen resolution etc to see if you can get the os to boot up normally.

Hi xfade,
Can you boot to the c: prompt? If you can, type this "scanreg /restore" (without the quotes) and then choose a date from before the installation of DirectX. It may get you going again.

if the scanreg/restore won't do the trick, get really wild and run scanreg/fix sometimes the fix is "the fix". p.s. i don't think you will get that lucky but what the hey, it's worth a shot.

If during the bootup process where it hangs, if you can see what file it's hanging at get to the c: prompt and then bring up win.ini and see if you can find that file entry there. If you do delete it and try that.
