This may be a stupid question, but do you have the DVD software installed? A DVD player will not play DVD's without the right software.

Someone I know thought that just because they had a DVD drive that they bought from someone, that it would play DVD's.

Yes, you need DVD software. Windows Media player won't play it. Two good programs are WinDVD (http://www.intervideo.com/jsp/Product_Profile.jsp?p=WinDVD) and PowerDVD (http://www.powerdvd.tv/). You could also get a DVD decoder card if your computer isn't fast enough to play DVDs through software. HTH
