Can someone help me out here. I've been having problems with frequent freezes playing a game (Rune). The freeze only occurs while gaming. Right now my vid card and nic are sharing IRQ 11. I want to rule out an IRQ problem before I replace the vid card. IRQ's 3 & 4 are free. How can I manualy change my nic's IRQ to 3 or 4. Do I have to do it through the bios?
Thanks for the help, DB

Hi DragonBreath,

Make sure your NIC is not in PCI 1 (the slot next to the AGP slot), those two share the same IRQ.

Which motherboard are you using?

Some motherboards allow you to assign IRQ's to the first 4 PCI slots in BIOS, but PCI 1 is pretty much useless if you're using a AGP video card. PCI 4 usually shares resources with another device. PCI 2 and 3 usually don't share resources (depending on the motherboard) and you might be able to get the NIC on it's own IRQ by installing it in one of these two slots. You might be able to assign IRQ 3 or 4 to the slot by changing it from AUTO to IRQ 3 or 4.

You might also be able to change the IRQ assignment through Device Manager. Select the NIC (cannot be in PCI slot 1) and click Properties. Click on the Resources tab and see if you can uncheck the "Use automatic settings" box. If you can, select the Interrupt request and then click on "Change Setting". See if IRQ 3 or 4 are available (might be, might not). If available, select an IRQ and click Okay. Click Okay again and reboot your system.

I had this problem also Dragon. I was using a g-force vid card that I installed in a store brought HP computer. I ran a Powerstrip dianostic and sent it to Nvidia. Found out that my AGP revision on the motherboard was 1.0 and G-force cards need 2.0, so using this great sites tutorials I rebuilt the computer with new motherboard. Has worked great ever since.

I do have my nic in PCI 1. I read on some tweak sight that nics perform better here. Did'nt know it shared the same irq as the agp. I'll be switching it. I did try changing the IRQ in BIOS but my windows would not run after that so I had to switch it back. Thanks much for the info and the entech sight DB I'm using an Asus a7m266 mobo by the way.
