1998 windows

Last night, I was going through my Device Manager, updating all my drivers. It updated the display adapter,, the one installed now is Standard PCI Graphics Adapter(VGA). I restarted my computer and the dispay is all messed up. I think it has 2 or 16 color now, where before it was capable of 256 color or high or true. I messed up. I need to find the old driver and reinstall it. I think? If I go into the device manager and ask for driver details in display adapter it shows the before mentioned driver and on called vmm32.vxd(vdd.vxd). Is this the original one? If so how can I reuse it? This display is horrible and really getting on my nerves. Also, how can I be sure not to do this again when trying to update my drivers. I sure would appreciate some answers.

What type of graphics card is it that you have installed in your system?????

Let me know and I'll have a look for the drivers for you.

If you don't know the graphics card have a look for a program called "Scitech Display Doctor" this should tell you which card that you have or at least the chipset used.

You can get it from here: http://www.scitechsoft.com/download.html

Hope I've helped.

unfortunately, when the driver update failed, windows defaulted back to a very minimal adapter that is compatible with all displays so you can get a screen to look at. but it's nothing to look at is it? when you first bootup with the monitor warmedup, it will first display the video card and version number before you get the bios screen [depending on which pc you have]. knowing this info helps to search for it's website and download to current driver.

First of - VMM32.VXD is a SYSTEM FILE - do not mess with it..!! you will not be able to run windows if corrupted or removed..

Second - boot to DOS prompt and reverse what you did by using SCANREG /RESTORE from the command prompt - getting back a registry from the day before you made the upgrade..

Third when done go into Device manager and check the Display Adapter properties - note down the Adapter as there will then actually the one which was installed prior to your upgrade be shown..

Fourth - download the drivers for it from it's corresponding websites - if there aren't any then DON'T CARE.. leave it the way it is if it doesn't cost any problems ..

Hope this helps

Thanks everyone for the help. I fixed by reverting to pre dated settings via the scanreg/restore command. Thanks again
