Hi,

I have an SB live! Sound card in my computer which has been fine until now.

I had to do a clean install of win 98 and now I get a crackling noise upon startup & Shutdown.

It only lasts for a few seconds and then that is it. Unless scandisk runs and then it continues throughout the duration of scandisk!

The card used to be on IRQ 5 in the good old days, but since the new installation it is now on IRQ 9. It isn't sharing with anything else!

How can I get it back onto IRQ 5 to see if this is the problem!

Thanks in advance!

Since you just did a clean install, check in your Device Manager and see if your hard drive is using DMA mode. For some reason, mine gets staticky sound every time the HDD isn't in DMA mode.

I had the same problem with my sb live
I fixed mine by opening creative sound mixer and moving all the sliders for all the vol controlls down to 90% My sound blaster set it at 100% by default. Any higher then 90% and i would get the same static at start and shut down pluss when playing some mp3's. Maybe it'll work for you.

Try: right clicking "My Computer", going to "Properties", in the "Device Manager" tab, go down to "Creative Miscellaneous Devices", Double click on "Creative SB16 Emulation" Go to the "settings" tab. Do you see "Allow lpt interupt sharing"? Make sure that box is checked. I believe this might fix what you're experiencing as this allows a sharing with the IRQ's. Try it.

Hi Hurricane,

The box was already ticked! I unchecked it and it still makes the noise!!

I think your power supply may be the culprit.
