safe mode with himem.sys missing!

Okay, it started when my kids were installing games. Display had to be changed, blah, blah. Anyway, days later I noticed my background was wierd. I went to change the Display back and it wouldn't let me. Someone told me to go to systems and delete my adapter and restart and it would look for the driver. And it would be fine! WRONG! days later. now I am in safe mode and can't get online to download anything. and it tells me from a c: that himem.sys is missing. what do i do now?????? someone please help.:confused:

first of all: is himem.sys really missing?
Boot to a command prompt (windows 98 boot floppy) or any other method (f8 on boot right after POST beep)and at the c:\> prompt, type dir /s himem.sys and hit the enter key. if it comes back with himem.sys at c:\windows, then its an issue with the config.sys file, and you can edit it out, or simply rename config.sys to config.xxx (your choice) and boot windows.
If you don't have himem.sys anywhere, then you may need to extract it.
extracting files in DOS is not difficult, but it's time consuming.

If the file is gone, then there may be more than a couple of files changed (Was this by chance an old DOS game?) and reloading the OS may get better results.
If the games were newer...
Also, if this is win98, you may try a scanreg /restore at a c: prompt. take the registry back in time to when the games weren't installed.

well, when it tries to restart, it goes through the choose SAFE MODE and then it pops up himem.sys is missing. c:

I will try your suggestion and let you know how it is.

the games, believe were dos based. Grandmother bought at staples but - I believe they were dated games.
