View Full Version : Any way to recover a lost file?

I had a couple of files saved on a floppy that was recently damaged. I suspect the damage was magnetic, but either way I'm not able to access the files on the disk, and I didn't have the latest versions saved on my hard drive. Before I use a utility like Norton Disk Doctor, I thought I might see if I could recover the lost files out of a Temp file. In Windows Explorer, I found one of the files I needed, except that it was a much older version than the one I had last used on my computer. (The version I found was several days older than the last version I had saved to my floppy disk.)

I've heard that the computer caches all documents and files and was wondering if this is true, and if there is a way to recover such documents besides finding them in the TEMP folder. Any suggestions, or am I out of luck?

Thanks!

Zan

Depending on the damage and how badly you need the files, there are companies who specialize in data recovery (gov't and police agencies especially :D ). For a price $$

Nah, I was hoping I could do it myself...it's not important enough that I'd pay to have them recovered, but it is a bit of work I'd like to not have to do over again.

If there isn't a way I can go in myself and find the files cached somewhere on my hard drive, then I guess I'll use Norton on the disk on Monday and see if that turns up anything.

If not...back to the drawing board, I guess. (And more prudent backups)

Thanks for your reply!
