When windows starts I get a message that says "cannot find C:\windows\guided.exe" wich was one of the infected files that I had to remove due to the Win32/magistr.B virus I picked up. What do I need to do to get this message to stop coming up? Run win98se disk back through?

Hi Drenner,

Did you check in the StartUp folder for any reference to guided.exe? Windows Explorer> c:\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\StartUp.

If there's no entry in the StartUp folder, maybe there's a Registry key that's making it start up in Windows. RegCleaner might be able to remove the key for you: RegCleaner (http://www.jv16.org/)

If RegCleaner doesn't work, you may have to do it manually. Enter the Registry at your own risk. Start RegEdit and go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE> Software> Microsoft> Windows> Current Version> Run. You could try the Find function under the Edit Menu and do a search for guided.exe.

A word of caution about the Registry. Make a backup first...just in case. Don't delete anything else and don't move anything. If you mess up the Registry, Windows won't run.

I'm not an expert at working in the Registry, so my suggestion to you is do a search on the net and see if you can find websites that can help you out by providing information regarding the Registry. I'm sure there are many sites out there. You can start here: Windows Registry Guide (http://www.regedit.com/)

Look for guided.exe in msconfig and uncheck it then restart. Start--run--type msconfig--ok--startup tab.
