A freebie that has ZA and Sygate scrambling. Looks like it has even more features than they do as well.

Sarge,
Good point. If the program does what it says, even the free one looks good. You gonna give it a try?

Carl, I'll wait for YOU to try it, since you're the resident firewall & router geek. Besides, you can relay any "bugs" found. :D

I just downloaded it and I'll give it a try. I've been running ZoneAlarm for the past few weeks.

Better disable ZA from loading at startup, or it may get jealous. It's quirky at times. Let us know how it goes.

Sarge,
Actually Sarge, since we do have a hardware firewall with the router and ZA also, I'd say we were well protected.

I've just been using it for half-an-hour and I can already say that it has a lot more features and options than Zone Alarm. It basically works the same by prompting you whenever a new app tries to access the web, but the interface is much nicer and there is tons of info about your connection and each program that has net access. Thanks SARGE, this is a great program! I'll keep you guys updated.

Edit: Wow, just found the mail filter and "attack detection" plugins. :D

;) I find the browser tweaks and new firewalls and let you guys try it first. :D

DrZaius,
Did you uninstall ZA or disable it before you installed the f/w?

I uninstalled Zone Alarm completely before installing Outpost.

Hello, I installed this firewall and must say it seems to be pretty good. A lot more features is for sure. Thanks Sarge.

Not only would I uninstall Zone Alarm, but I would also remove the Zonelabs Folder from C after the uninstall and run RegCleaner to get rid of the entry it leaves after you uninstall it.

Is it compatible with win xp? I didn't find info about this in the program's page.

Whoa there. Keep a copy of ZA to reinstall, just in case. I uninstalled recently and couldn't surf until reinstall. Another story

AD BLOCKING!!!!! I'm gonna be playing with this!

Popup killer too!!

Well, I'm convinced. A firewall, ad-killer, popup killer, checks and renames suspicious e-mail attachments, all in one neat program, all it needs now is a virus scanner.

I found info about this in the download page, I've downloaded it, I'll test it now!
But should I disable win xp firewall?

After uninstalling Zone alarm and re-booting, I was perplexed to see the message "The System.Ini file has been deleted or is missing, cannot load windows, press any key to continue"! Is Zone Alarm similar to Norton in that it wants total control of your system even after removal????

WOW! This AD removal feature ROCKS!

I tried this firewall last nite & have to say I REALLY dont like it.

Sure, it has some nice features, but twice I got DNS errors (not sure if this is due to the DNS caching feature) but after disabling it I still got DNS errors.

I found it is also not intuitive as to what to do when you get a alert. I actually blocked IE at one stage though the prompt I got was that I was allowing it access.

I find ZA much easier to use..& as they say "if it aint broke, dont fix it"..

TweakXP does a fine job of ad-blocking for me.

Hmmm, I thought that my ISP is responsible for these DNS errors.

Ok, let me clarify this:

I got DNS errors because I couldnt send any outbound communication. IE: I couldnt contact my ISP (who I work for as a tech) because OUTPOST blocked my requests.

Comprende?

I dumped it also after I had the same problems getting out. Had to uninstall it completely and unplug and rest my router to get communication again. Back to Sygate for me.

Fun didn't last for a long time, maybe they'll fix this in the next version.

Hmmm... I have it on 3 machines so far, no problems.

I agree though, it's not as simple as ZA is for the new user.

I didn't encounter any problems/errors with this program yet. I have it running all the time (of course) and am very pleased with the results.

My brother has had some problems with it, he's still fighting with it though as he sees that it works fine on the other machines that I have loaded it on.

Well, I've been playing with it for just under 2 weeks now and have gone back to ZoneAlarm and Ad-Subtract. While Outpost is not bad, it's still a bit behind keeping in mind that it is listed as "release candidate 1". Given a bit of time to mature, I'll give it another go and may switch over yet.
